Kartta ~ Map

Tässä on kartta (linkki alla) toteutuneesta matkastani, hieman se kyllä poikkesi alkuperäisestä suunnitelmasta. On huima nähdä konkreettisesti millainen matkastani lopulta sukeutui. Jokainen kilometri on täynnä huimia muistoja, jotka yhä lämmittävät mieltäni.

Ihme ~ Wonder

Ihme

Olisikohan viimein aika laittaa Vietnam pakettiin ja jatkaa matkaa uusiin maisemiin. Koska asetuin Hoi Aniin viikoksi alkoi maassaolo aikani lipumaan käsistä, niinpä suuntasin yöbussilla suoraan Hanoihin. Kaupunki itsessään ei tehnyt suurtakaan vaikutusta. Paljon hehkutettu Old Quarter ei tarjonnut minulle juuri mitään, lukuunottamatta herkullisia juomia markkinoilla. Joitakin nähtävyyksiä kävin kiertämässä, mutta silti kaupungista jäi jotenkin valju kuva. Toisaalta tänne en ollutkaan tullut jäädäkseni vaan suuntasin loistavaan matkatoimistoon buukkaamaan risteilyä Halong Bayhin, joka olikin pääsyy paluuseeni Vietnamiin. Tarkoituksena oli nähdä tämä maailman kuulu ilmestys yhdessä ystäväni kanssa, mutta poikkeavasta matkailubudjetista johtuen päädyin tekemään retken itsekseni. Matkatoimisto antoi useammankin vaihtoehdon yhdestä yöstä kahteen yöhän ja hintahaitariltaan minulle sopivia vaihtoehtoja. Löysin mieleiseni ja pian matka taas jatkui.

Old Quarter in Hanoi

Yhtiö poimi minut matkaan hotelliltani aamutuimaan ja matka satamaan alkoi. Siellä saimme liput ja nousimme pieneen veneeseen, joka kuljetti meidät varsinaiselle aluksellemme. Joka oli kohtuullisen viehättävä ja juuri sopivan kokoinen pienelle joukollemme. Olin varannut makuupaikan jaetusta hytistä ja ilokseni muita jakajia matkaan ei osunut ja sain oman hytin. Hyvillä mielin olin valmis suuntaamaan kauan odottamaani kohteeseen ja tuntui hyvältä kun tuuli heilutti hiuksia veneen lipuessa kohti upeita maisemia. Näky sai minut haukkomaan henkeä, en ollut osannut odottaa mitään näin kaunista. Sää helli meitä auringon paisteella ja kirkkaalla kelillä.

Halong Bay

Ensimmäinen päivämme veneellä oli hieman liian aktiivinen minun makuuni, ohjelmaa oli aamusta iltaan, eikä aikaa levähtää ja pysähtyä näihin upeisiin maisemiin tuntunut löytyvän. Seikkailimme luolan uumenissa ja vaikka se olikin upea ilmestys, olisin mielummin jättänyt sen väliin. Toisaalta melominen näiden upeiden muodostelmien seassa oli elämys, jota en olisi jättänyt väliin mistään hinnasta ja siihen olisin toivonut jopa hieman enemmän aikaa. Uimaankin pääsimme yhden saaren rantaan, nähdessäni täyteen pakatun hiekkarannan, jossa suuret roska- ja jäteleutat kelluivat, päätin pysyä kuivalla maalla ja kivuta näköalapaikalle, josta avaituikin hulppeat näkymät. Olin tyytyväinen kun päivän aktiviteetit päätyivät illalliseen ja rauha laskeutui yön myötä. Hiivin kannelle olueni kanssa ja ihastelin näkymää, jota tuskin koskaan tulen unohtamaan. Siinä istuessani ja katsellessani muiden veneiden yössä loistavia valoja, tajusin kuinka onnellinen oikein olenkaan. Kuinka ainutkertaisesta elämyksestä tässä olikaan kyse. Muistan yhä elävästi sen onnen tunteen joka hiipi sisimpääni. Mieltäni ei latistanut edes ohilipuva soutuvene, josta kaikui huudot ostaa juomia ja tuliaisia. Olin maailman äärellä itsekseni, enkä olisi voinut olla onnellisempi.

Seuraavana päivänä suuntasimme kiertoteitse takaisin satamaan ja nautin päivästä enemmän kuin edellisen päivän aktiviteetti ryntäyksestä. Sain ihastella maisemia rauhassa, eikä näkymään voi kyllästyä. Halong Bay on yksinkertaisesti ihme, todellinen ilmestys. Ainakin aurinkoisella säällä se on henkeä salpaavan kaunis. Olisin mielelläni ollut vielä toisenkin yön, valitettavasti Laos kutsui minua. Mutta olen iloinen että palasin Vietnamiin ja näin jotain näin upeaa. Ryhmämme veneellä oli kohtuullisen pieni ja kirjava, seura miellyttävää. Vaikka suurimman osan ajasta nautinkin omassa seurassa ja hiljaisuudessa näkyä itseeni imien.

Halong bayn satamasta bussi vei meidät takaisin Hanoihin. Illastin ystäväni kanssa ja sovimme seuraavan päivän järjestelyistä. Laos täältä tullaan…

Wonder

I think it’s time to close chapter Vietnam and head to see different scenery in different country. Because I ended u staying in Hoi An for whole week I was running out of the time. My only option was to take night bus to Hanoi. I have a day to go around city, but it just did not appeal to me at all. Much raised Old Quarter didn’t offer me anything, except tasty drinks on the market. I did go around to see some sites, but still the City was blame. Luckily I wasn’t staying here any longer, I headed straight to excellent travel agency recommended by other traveller and booked cruise to Halong Bay, which after all was my main reason for return to Vietnam. Original plan was to see this wonder together with my friend, but uneven travel budget made us to choose different trips and I headed to the harbour on my own. Travel agency gave me several options with my budget to choose for, there were cruises from one to two nights. I found one to please me and head on the next morning.

Company picked me up at the hotel in the morning and I was ready to go. Tour guide gave us our tickets and off we went to this little boat which took us on the ship. Boat was actually quite charming and good size for our little group. I did booked bed from shared cabin to save some money and pleasant surprise was that no one else wasn’t sharing and I got the whole cabin for myself. I was pretty happy the choices I’ve made so far and I was ready to see long waited sight. It was great to feel wind blowing your hair when getting closer for this amazing view. Sight of the bay was taking breath away from me, I wasn’t prepared to see anything this beautiful after all. We were really lucky with the weather, we got sunny and clear day, all we could hope for.

First day on the boat was bit too active for my taste as we had schedule from the morning till the evening and no time to stop and admire the beauty of this place. We went to big cave which was quite impressive, but I would have rather skipped that. Then other hand kayaking on the bay was something I would haven’t miss in any chase, it was incredible and actually I hoped we would have had more time for it. We got chance to go for a swim too in one of the islands, but I choose not to after seeing how packed the beach was and how much rubbish was floating on the water. I decided to walk up to the hill and enjoy great view instead and I absolutely loved it up there. I was more than happy when the silence and peace took the place after dinner. I sneaked out on the deck with bear and looked around. This was moment I’ll never forget, I was watching light of other boats and in that moment I just realized how happy I am to be there. This moment was unique and happiness in my side was something I cannot describe. I was on the other end of the world and couldn’t be any happier.

Next day we cruised along the bay slowly back to the harbour. Day was more enjoyable with no rush to anywhere, just chilling on the deck while rock formations passing by. I would never get tired for the view. Halong bay is miracle, simply just miracle. Specially in sunny weather it is breath-taking. I wish I would have had another night to spend on the bay, but unfortunately Laos was calling. I felt happy, that I did made my way back to Vietnam and saw something incredible like Halong Bay. Group and staff on the boat was small and mixed, but it was nice group and we did have a great time together. Even I spent most of the time on my own just enjoying the whole experience.

After cruise bus took us back to Hanoi. I had dinner with friends and we made last-minute arrangements for the next day. Laos here we come…

Ensimmäinen visiittini Vietnamiin ei ollut aivan sitä mitä olin odottanut. Pettymyksestä huolimatta palasin, oli aika antaa maalle uusi mahdollisuus. Luvassa olisi kiireinen pari viikkoa. Suunnitellessani matkaa Saigonista Hanoihin päädyin siihen että lennän suoraan Danangiin ajan voittamiseksi. Aloitan matkani Hoi Anista ja suuntaan etappi kerrallaan aina Hanoihin asti, jossa tapaamme jälleen ystäväni kanssa. Kuten elämä on jo opettanut kaikki ei aina mene suunnitelmien mukaan, onneksi.

Saavuin bussilla Kambodzasta takaisin Saigoniin, tosin vain yhdeksi yöksi, mutta oli kiva palata tuttuun ympäristöön vielä ennen uusia maisemia. Aamutuimaan jatkoin matkaa lentäen Danangiin, josta linja-autolla Hoi Aniin. Olin varannut majapaikan kolmeksi yöksi, sillä tahdoin tutustua tähän kovasti kehuttuun kylään ihan rauhassa, ennen kuin jatkaisin matkaa kohti pohjoista. Hostellin ilmapiiri yllätti minut täysin. Nuoret naiset pyörittivät vasta avattua hostellia koiranpentujen pyöriessä vieraiden jaloissa ja vauvan jokellellessa sylissä. Tänne olivat kaikki asiakkaat tervetulleita. Mutta vielä enemmän yllätyin matkalaisten asenteesta ja heidän luomastaan ilmapiiristä. Kaikki hengailivat yhdessä ja uudet tulokkaat otettiin innolla vastaan. Illalliselle suunnattiin porukalla vuokratuilla polkupyörillä ja aamupäivästä samat fillarit ottivat suunnaksi upeat hiekkarannat. Aina löytyi seuraa ja porukka johon lyöttäytyä. Yksi toisensa jälkeen pidensimme siellä olo aikaamme.

Hoi An teki minuun suuren vaikutuksen ja nautin sen rennosta tunnelmasta enemmän kuin olin etukäteen osannut kuvitellakaan. Lopulta viivyin siellä kokonaisen viikon ja sen sijaan että olisin hiljakseen suunnannut Hanoihin varasin viime hetken yöbussin, joka vei minut kerta rysäyksellä perille asti. Mahdollisesti minulta jäi hienoja paikkoja näkemättä ja upeita asioita kokematta. Mutta silti olen onnellinen että jäin Hoi Aniin, se oli täydellinen paikka minulle sillä hetkellä. Upea sekoitus idylliä ja vilkasta menoa vanhassa kaupungissa sekä rauhaa ja aurinkoa pitkillä valkoisilla hiekkarannoilla. Päivät menivät hyvässä seurassa rannalla paistatellen ja illalla suuntasimme herkkujen ääreen viehättäviin ravintoloihin. Tämä oli rytmi, johon totuin oikein mielelläni. Ihmiset joihin tutustuin ollessani Sac Lo hostellissa olivat mahtavia ja tekivät tästä paikasta ikimuistoisen.

Hoi An on täynnä toinen toistaan viehättävämpiä ravintoloita, kahviloita, putiikkeja ja räätäleitä. Se on kaunis niin päivisin kuin iltahämärässäkin. Harva onnistui pysähtymään ilman että olisi teettänyt vaatteita, sorruin itsekin samaan. Edullisia ja yksilöllisiä vaatteita mittatilauksena, kuinka olisinkaan voinut vastustaa kiusausta. Ja jottei tämä rantaloma aivan olisi mennyt lekotteluksi, suuntasin My Son -retkelle ja kiertelin joitakin vanhan kaupunginkin nähtävyykistä. Angkor Watin jälkeen My Son tuntui lähinnä ajan haaskaukselta, sillä Siem Reapissä olin jo nähnyt raunioiden kauneuden parhaimmillaan. Myöskään nähtävyydet joihin suuntasin kylillä, eivät tehneet minuun suurta vaikutusta ja harmittelin, että olin menettänyt yhden otollisen rantapäivän kulttuurin parissa.

Hoi Anista löysin Vietnamin josta todella pidin. En tiedä oliko se paikan ansiota vai siellä olevien ihmisten vaiko kenties molempien yhdistelmä. Hiljalleen me jokainen kuitenkin suuntasimme omille teillemme ja täältä sai lähteä hyvillä mielin, levänneenä ja iloisena. Usko Vietnamin hyvyyteen alkoi palailla.

Holiday

My first visit to Vietnam wasn’t quite what I expected it to be. I was disappointed, but still after few weeks I made my way back to Vietnam and decided to give it another go. It would be busy two weeks ahead. When I planned my trip from Saigon to Hanoi I decide to fly straight to Danang to win some time and then start my trip from Hoi An step by step all the way to Hanoi, where I would meet my friend again. But like so many times before things did not go like planned, which was good.

I arrived to Saigon from Cambodia by bus, only for one night, but it felt pretty nice to be somewhere familiar again before heading to new places. Next morning I flew to Danang, then I took local bus to Hoi An. I had booking for three nights in hostel, I wanted to take my time to get to know this much talked town before heading up to north. Atmosphere of the hostel was total surprise to me. Two young women were running newly opened hostel, puppies were running around guests feet and baby was on their arms. This place welcomes everyone. But even more surprised I was about all the guests I met here. Everyone was hanging together and new customers were invited to join them. For dinner we head together with rented bikes and in the morning we jumped to same saddles and paddle together to the beach. There was always group to join in. One after other we extended our stay there.

I was very impressed by Hoi An and I did enjoy relaxed atmosphere way more than I expected. I actually stayed one whole week and booked night bus in last-minute straight to Hanoi, I didn’t have time to explore more of Vietnam, time was running out. I’m sure I missed some incredible places and experiences. But I was happy of my decision to stay in Hoi An, in that moment it was perfect place for me. Hoi An is a nice mixture of idyll and lively life in old town and peace and sun on those long sandy beaches. All day I spent time on the beach and in the evening we headed to charming restaurants to enjoy delicious food. This was rhythm of life I was ready for. People I met during my stay in Sac Lo hostel were great and made this place immemorial.

Hoi An was full of gorgeous little restaurants, cafes, shops and tailors. It was beautiful during the day and middle of the night. There was very few travellers who passed this town without new tailor-made clothes and I must admit I wasn’t one of them. Cheap and unique hand-made clothes for your measure, how could I have resist the temptation. Even I spent most of the time on the beach I did head to My Son tour in one day and other day I went around tourist attractions in old town. After Angkor Wat I felt like wasting my time in My Son, I already saw most beautiful ruins in Siem Reap. Also attractions in old town let me down and I felt like I should have spent that day on the beach instead of cultural sightseeing.

In Hoi An I found Vietnam I really liked. I am not sure is it because of the place itself or people I met there or possible combination of both. After while it was time for all of us head to our own adventures and to our own ways. I left Hoi An well rested, feeling good and happy. I started to believe goodness of Vietnam again.

Rauha ~ Peace

Eksoottinen yöbussi toi meidät Siem Riepistä suoraan Sihanoukvilleen. Onneksi olin matkalla ystäväni kanssa, sillä jaoimme oikean vuoteen linja-autossa, se vain sattui olemaan yhdenhengen sängyn levyinen. Tiiviistä tunnelmasta huolimatta tämä matkustus muoto antoi hieman normaalia paremmat unet. Hektisten temppelipäivien jälkeen olin yrittäin iloinen nähdessäni jälleen meren ja halusin hidastaa matkatahtia ja kyllähän se hidastuikin.

Saavuimme Otres Beachille ilman varsinaista suunnitelmaa. Karmaiseva yöpaikkamme piti meidät poissa huoneestamma rannan tuntumassa ja antoi samalla kimmokkeen jatkaa matkaa. Aikamme kierreltyaä ja tutkittua vaihtoehtoja päädyimme ottamaan veneretken seuraavana päivänä kohti Koh Rong Samloemia, josta varasimme majoituksen muutamaksi yöksi. Olin iloinen jättäessäni Otresin pössyttelybaarit taakseni. Ja kun veneemme rantautui tälle täydelliselle häikäisevän valkoiselle rantahiekalle tiesin että olimme tehneet oikean päätöksen. Ranta oli kaunis ja bungalowien edustalla se oli jopa siisti ja uiminen mielekästä.

Koh Rong Samleom

Tosin onni ei kestänyt turhan kauan. Ystäväni sairastui ensimmäisen yön aikana pahasti ja olikin sängyn oma siitä teenpäin. Sen lisäksi että kannoin huolta hänen voinnistaan, minut piti hänen luonaan myös jatkuva sade. Jaoimme siis muutaman päviän enemmän tai vähemmän kokoaikaisesti tämän pienen viihtyisän bungalowin, jonne kanssamme oli pesiytynyt myös jonkinlainen rotta, joka nautiskeli herkullisista laukuistamme öisin. Keli kirkastui vasta lähtöpäivänämme. Eli tästä lomasta paratiisi saarelle ei aivan muodostunut sellaista kuin olimme kuvitelleet. Jäi tekemättä sekä viidakkovaellukset että kanoottiretket, mutta tulipahan levättyä.

Kyseinen saari teki kuitenkin syvän vaikutuksen ja päätin palata sinne vielä jonakin päivänä yhdessä kumppanini kanssa. Tämä on paikkoja jonne tullaan yhdessä oman rakastetun kanssa, nautitaan luonnon kauneudesta, viinistä ja toisistamme. Ja niin moni olikin päättänyt tehdä. Ikävä sisälläni kasvoi nähdessäni nämä onnelliset pariskunnat käsikädessä tällä kuvan kauniilla rannalla. Mitä oikein tein täällä ilman kumppaniani?

Palasimme Sihanoukvilleen ja ystäväni pääsi lääkäriin. Pikkuhiljaa hänen vointinsa koheni ja hän oli valmis jatkamaan matkaa. Varmistin vielä että hän olisi tarpeeksi hyvissä voimissa jatkaakseen matkaa itsekseen aina Vietnamiin asti ja omiin seikkailuihin. Kun olin varma että hän pärjää sanoin hyvästit ja toivotin hyvää matkaa, tapaisimme pian uudelleen Vietnamin puolella.

Jäin siis vielä Kambodzaan itsekseni ja ainoa asia mitä kaduin oli se ettei minulle ollut enemmän aikaa jäljellä. Viimeinen pysähdykseni ennen Phnom Penhiin paluutani oli Kampot.

Majapaikkani Ganesha Guest House sijaitsi kaukana keskustasta keskellä riisipeltoja. Nappasin siis tuktukin asemalta ja lumouduin paikasta mitä lähemmäksi majapaikkaa saavuimme. Tie muuttui kaduksi, katu poluksi ja polku kapeni entisestään. Meidät ympäröi pienen pienet kylät ja riisipellot. Olin haltioissani vesipuhveleista joita oli siellä täällä ja lopullisesti myytyä kun näin pienen pojan ratsastavan seisaallaan yhden selässä. Hymyni leveni entisestään ja olin onnellinen että olin tullut. Kun pääsin perille, tiesin tulleeni oikeaan paikkaan. Täältä löysin rauhan jota olin vailla kaiken hektisen matkaamisen jälkeen. Sade antoi hyvän tekosyyn käpertyä hyvän kirjan ja juoman pariin. Annoin itselleni luvan olla laiska ja nautin omasta tilasta ja rauhasta jonka olin saanut takaisin. Matka kylään kävellen kesti liki tunnin, nautin maisemista ja kohdalle osuneista ihmisistä. Avoimista hymyistä, tuijotuksista, vilkutuksista ja jopa kättelystä. Tunsin olevani elossa ja paikassa jossa minut hyväksytään muukalaisenakin. Kampot itsessään ei ollut kummoinen, mutta lähiseudu sitäkin upeampi kaikessa hiljaisuudessaan. Ajatus paluustani vahvistui entisestään.

 

Ganesha Guest House

Tieni vei vielä kerran takaisin pääkaupunkiin ennen kuin jatkoin matkaa Vietnamiin. Nyt kaupunki oli hieman tutumpi ja kodin tuntu oli voimakkaampi. Yövyin tietysti samassa hostellissa, jossa tapasin mahtavia matkalaisia. Kun viimeinen aamu koitti ja kipusin autoon jättääkseni Kambodzan ja Lovely Jubbly hostellin taakseni kyyneleet yllättivät minut täysin. Olikin yllättävän vaikea jättää taakse tämä upea maa. Lupasin itselleni että palaan! Maalla on vielä minulle paljon tarjottavaa ja sen ihmisillä vielä aitoja hymyjä tuhlattavaksi. Olen onnellinen että sain mahdollisuuden vierailuun. Tämä on juuri sitä mitä varten matkustan, tämä on muistutus siitä miksi jälleen kerran jätin kaiken taakse ja nostin rinkan selkään. Peace

Exotic night bus took us all to way to Sihanoukville from Siem Riep. Luckily I traveled with my friend as we shared real bed at the bus, this bed just was size of the single bed. So it was rather cozy but I actually manage to sleep better than in any other buses before. After all those hectic days in temples I was more than happy to see ocean and really wanted to slow down finally and actually we did slow down quite a bit since we hit the beach.

We did have any plans when we arrived to Otres Beach. Unfortunately we picked really bad guesthouse, but that was good reason to spend time on the beach and head on the very next day. After while comparing options around the beach we decided to take a boat to Koh Rong Samloem on next day and stay couple nights there in a bungalow. I was fairly happy to leave Otres Beach and pot-heads behind. And when we finally arrived to this perfect white sandy beach I knew we couldn’t have chosen better. Beach was absolutely gorgeous and front of beach bungalows beach was clean, nice and shallow for swimming.

This happiness did not last long. My friend got really sick in the first night on the island and spent rest of the time in the bed. I spent most of the time in the bungalow with her as I was worried, but also because pouring rain outside. So few days we spent in this nice bungalow together and in the day we left we found out that we had company too as rat had chewed our bags during the night. Weather improved in the day we were supposed to return back to mainland. So our holiday in this beautiful paradise island wasn’t quite what we expected it to be. We skipped little jungle hikes and kayaking, but at least we had finally time to rest.

But this Island really had great impact for me and I decided to return there one day with my partner. Actually this is the place you go with you love one to enjoy beauty of the nature, wine and each other. And you could see that around you as many were here just for that. Seeing all these happy couples on the beach walking hand in hand made me miss my partner even more than usually. What the heck I was doing there without him?

We returned back to Sihanoukville and finally got my friend to see doctor there. Slowly she was getting better, maybe because of the medicine she got and rest she had got on the island. But she was ready to head on. I made sure she was strong enough to head on to Vietnam by herself to her own adventures. And then it was time to say goodbyes for now, we would see again in Vietnam later. So I stayed in Cambodia on my own and only thing I regret was that I didn’t have more time in Cambodia before heading to Vietnam again. My last stop before I traveled back to Phnom Penh was Kampot.

I booked Ganesha Guest House far from Kampot town, middle of the rice fields. I got Tuk Tuk to take me there and I was really fascinated on the journey towards my accommodation. Road came street and street came track until it got even more narrow, hardly drivable by Tuk Tuk. There were tiny little villages on the way and rice fields everywhere. I was really happy to see so many water buffalos and got really excited when I saw young boy stand on one while it slowly made his way along those fields. I couldn’t been happier that I choose to stay there, it really was place for me. I found the peace I were looking for after all that traveling and rain gave me a good excuse to stay in and read my book and enjoy nice cold drinks. I allowed my self to be lazy and just enjoyed my own space I finally got back again. Walk back to Kampot town took about an hour while I sucked in all that beauty around me and greet people along the way. I received friendly smiles, curious stares, happy waving and even a handshake. I felt like I was alive again in a place I was accepted even I was a stranger. Kampot itself was bit boring but surroundings are amazing. In this point I was quite sure I’ll be back.

I ended up one more time back to capital of Cambodia before heading to Vietnam again. Now this city felt much more like a home as I was familiar with it. And obviously I stayed in the same hostel than previous visit and met some great people there. On my last morning in the country I got totally surprised by tears when I got to bus and left Lovely Jubbly hostel and Cambodia behind. I did not realize how hard it could be to leave this incredible country. And I did promise to myself that I’ll be back. Cambodia still have a lot of to offer for me and there is still some genuine smiles to discover. I am very happy that I got the chance to visit there. This is the reason why I travel, this was reminder for me why I took risk and left everything behind when I packed my bag and ahead to unknown. This is something I cannot discover in home, to find something as credible than I found in Cambodia you just need to go. Thank you Cambodia from everything
